Tip of the Week
Looking for Minnesota ancestors in your family? Search in the county your ancestor may have resided and then from there you may request a query for information or look through a surname list of people who lived in that county. Or you may also do a search of your own by searching the archives with the surname of your choice.
If you are wondering about the make up of the great state of Minnesota, such as who the people were that first lived there, look no further. Minnesota became a state in 1858, making them the 32nd state. As with most of the earlier states, Indians were the first true inhabitants of Minnesota. French Fur traders arrived in the last part of the 1600's and in the 1830's settlers came from all over to settle in Minnesota. The majority of these people were from the eastern United States, Canada and northern Europe. Later, as Minnesota continued to grow, people from eastern and southern Europe, Finland, Yugoslavia and Italy arrived to work. By 1900 almost 50 percent of people in Minnesota had German ancestors.
As you can see, like many other states, Minnesota has quite an array of history for genealogy research.
