November 9, 2007, Newsletter Issue #173: African American Genealogy

Tip of the Week

If you are looking for information online you can do a quick Internet search for African American genealogy.  If you know the state in which your ancestor lived, you can try to do a search within that state.  However, many states are not on an Internet list because there was just a simple lack of information in that state for online references.

You also must remember when searching your African American roots that you will most likely come into contact with information that is not pleasant to read and show negative stereotypes of African Americans.  Unfortunately, during the time of slavery and before, African Americans were not seen as people and many narratives, especially those written by slave owners, may depict some pretty harsh history for your relatives. Please do not associate what you learn with the website you learned it at, so they are simply relaying the information.
