February 3, 2006, Newsletter Issue #86: What To Take to the Cemetery!

Tip of the Week

Every good genealogist should put together a "cemetery kit" for use when visiting cemeteries. Things you might find useful for your kit include: shovel or small hoe (for removing overgrowth), cheap paint brushes (for removing dust and debris from the crevasses of the etchings), roll of paper towels or a box of baby wipes, a soft bristle brush to clean stones, gloves, notebook and pens/pencils to copy down the inscription, water, camera - with extra batteries and/or memory cards, mirror (8x10 minimum, to reflect sunlight and improve photo quality), gardenerīs knee pads, garden shears or heavy duty scissors (to clear weeds/grass), sunscreen, bug repellent, maps and copies of transcriptions, and a first aid kit.
